Imposter syndrome is a pattern of thinking that makes you think that you are not good enough. It makes you think that you are ‘fake’, ‘you’re NOT the real deal and is one of the major enemies of your personal progress.
Anyone can fall prey to imposter syndrome so don’t feel you are alone in this. Maya Angelou once said,
“I have written 11 books, but each time I think, ‘uh oh, they’re going to find out now. I’ve run a game on everybody, and they’re going to find me out.”
But with all her accomplishments and great work, who would have known this was her struggle?
Her life is a great example of someone who has faced the fears that come with imposter syndrome and come out the other side stronger.
And you know what?
This could be the story of your life too! You don’t have to let imposter syndrome hold you back.
So, to conquer it, we’ve put together these 5 tips to help you kick the imposter syndrome to the curb:
1. Acknowledge It!
Recognise it for what it is and call it out. This will help you figure out where the thoughts are coming from and will help you address them and move past your fear.
2. Ignore the negative thoughts or self-talk.
You can choose what thoughts linger in your mind. When you are bombarded with thoughts that make you feel inadequate or unworthy, picture yourself pushing those thoughts gently to one side with your hands and see them float away.
3. Get a piece of paper or your journal (if you have one) and write your top 10 achievements.
Go into detail and write. Trust yourself, you have a lot more than 10 but start with 10. This process will switch on the part of your brain that allows you to dream and imagine. It will reinforce the pathways in your brain that allow you to achieve those goals.
4. Step out of your comfort zone.
Challenge yourself by doing something that makes you nervous. For example, you can give a presentation in front of colleagues at work, pitch a business idea to new investors or even ask that special person you’re interested in out on a date. Doing this will show you what you are capable of and will ultimately boost your confidence.
5. Find someone (you can have more than one) that will speak to your greatness.
This is often overlooked but is one of the most important things you can do to win your battle against imposter syndrome. Find someone that respects the incredible person that you are and that isn’t shy to tell you about it! You need people like this around you. Those who pull you up with their words.
There are many more that we could give you, but this is a great start.
